It’s with heavy hearts that Karen Barabash’s (née Broadbent) family shares her passing on April 30, 2026, at the age of 78.
Karen was born in Kapuskasing and later lived in Dryden before moving to Thunder Bay in 1981 with her husband Gary and daughter Nicole. From a previous marriage, she had two daughters, Lori and Nicole Latour. Sadly, Lori passed away at just four years old due to complications from spina bifida and hydrocephalus. Even though this was a deep loss, Karen stayed strong and loving for Nicole.
Karen’s love for Nicole never faded. They had a close bond that nothing could break. She was always there supporting Nicole’s activities and everything she tried.
She was smart and quick-witted-rarely lost at trivia games-and always kept people guessing with her sharp sense of humor. At the same time, she had a gentle side that showed through how much she cared about others.
Karen worked hard all her life and really enjoyed her career until health issues made her retire earlier than planned. She often wished she could have gone back to work.
In 2017, Karen had a serious stroke and moved into long-term care at Bethammi Nursing Home on the second floor. She spent lots of time there with Nicole and her little dog Emma, who loved sitting on Karen’s wheelchair during their walks together. The staff at Bethammi gave amazing care – the family is very thankful for their kindness, dedication, and even the lovely hairstyles they gave Karen that brightened up her days.
Karen leaves behind her daughter Nicole (Trish) and brother Brian (Judy). She was preceded in death by her husband Gary; daughter Lori; parents Viola and Charles; and brother David.
Following Karen’s wishes, there won’t be a service held. Instead of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in her memory.
Mom, you will be forever missed. I will always cherish our memories and the time we shared as I grew into adulthood. I will carry with me the values and lessons you instilled in me, always.
