July 19, 1941 – January 11, 2026
We’re sad to share that Charles John Mintenko passed away on January 11th, 2026, which was also “Sister’s birthday,” at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Charlie was born July 19, 1941 and grew up in Slate River Valley. He worked as a porter for Westmount Hogarth until he retired about 30 years ago. He helped start the Oliver Paipoonge Volunteer Fire Department and was an active member of St. Marks Anglican Church.
Charlie was always busy around the house. If you lived nearby, you’d often see him curling, golfing, working the fields with his disk plow, snowmobiling, selling merchandise at the racetrack’s CRT stand, or cheering at local hockey games for the Thunderwolves, North Stars, and Walleye.
He had a personality that stuck with you – once you met Charlie, you were friends forever. He really lived life fully. A true gentleman-kindhearted and generous-he’d give you the shirt off his back without hesitation.
Though humble by nature, he loved his family fiercely. Uncle Charlie never missed any family event: dinners, football games, races, soccer matches, hockey games, graduations or baseball-he was always there rooting us on.
This past year was tough since Uncle Charlie fought cancer and couldn’t get out much socially. We want to thank all his friends for their love and support that lifted him every day. Special thanks to Lakehead Nurse Practitioners Carolan and Stacey; Cancer Centre staff; Bayshore team especially Julius; plus Noah and everyone on units 2C TBRHSC as well as 2South and 2North at St. Joseph’s Hospital for their care.
He is survived by “sister” Charlene Reed; nieces and nephew Tracy, Michele, Greg and Rachel; great nieces and nephews Christina and Jacob Dean along with Drake and Kolby Reed; Uncle Donald Mac Gregor; Aunt Audrey Mintenko plus many cousins. He was predeceased by parents George and Christina (Gertie) Mintenko as well as brother-in-law Melven Reed.
Charlie had a golden heart like those Werther’s candy wrappers he’d secretly slip into your pocket whenever you saw him-it’s hard to forget someone who gave so much to remember.
Visitation will take place Sunday January 18th at St. Mark’s Anglican Church located at 5 St. Mark’s Street in Rosslyn from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
Funeral service will be Monday January 19th at St. Mark’s Anglican Church starting at 1:00pm.
Donations made to Rural Cupboard would be appreciated.
We love you Uncle Charlie!
