The Greens are celebrating their best-ever result on Cambridge City Council after the local elections. It’s the first time in more than ten years that Labour has lost its firm grip – though Labour still holds the most seats.

Cameron Holloway, leader of Labour, was among six councillors who lost their spots to Greens as Labour faced losses all over the country. The Greens now hold 12 seats in Cambridge, pushing past the Liberal Democrats to become the second biggest party, with Labour leading at 17.

Naomi Bennett, who leads the Green group in Cambridge, gave credit to voters and campaigners and said their campaigns were “extremely positive”. She added they feel “very proud” that so many locals “came out and voted for hope not hate in overwhelming numbers on Thursday.”

She said: “Cambridge residents voted for change and we will deliver. Our new councillors will work hard with our existing Green councillors to protect and improve local services and make sure they work efficiently for residents in Cambridge.”

They also mentioned just missing out by a hair in Shelford for a South Cambridgeshire District Council seat-coming an “extremely close second,” only nine votes behind.

In Histon and Impington, they finished second too, with Lib Dems edging ahead by fewer than 200 votes. Miranda Fyfe, their candidate there, pointed out this shows there’s “no risk of Reform gaining seats” when people back Greens instead.

She said: “We have been saying for months that it would be between Lib Dems and Greens in these wards, with no risk of Reform gaining seats in Shelford or Histon and we were correct!

“South Cambridgeshire Greens will continue to campaign for real hope and real change here, holding the Lib Dems to account to deliver for people and planet, not profit and greed.”
