Once again, a standout spot in the Region of Waterloo has earned national praise, landing among the best restaurants in Canada.
The eatery at Langdon Hall Country House Hotel and Spa in Cambridge secured the 18th place on the latest ranking by media group and magazine Canada’s 100 Best.
Described by the food magazine as “Ontario’s most beloved and sophisticated country house hotel,” Langdon Hall was praised for its mostly Ontario-based, “terroir-driven cuisine that values flavour and sensory satisfaction as highly as meticulous technique.” The review also pointed out the “very proper dining room of pressed linens, polished crystal, formal service.”
Langdon Hall’s Executive Chef Jason Bangerter was also highlighted. He treats the kitchen along with nearby gardens and forest like his own “playground.” Chef Bangerter has plenty of other accolades too, including helping Langdon Hall earn the Five Diamond Restaurant Award from CAA/AAA.
This Cambridge restaurant was the only one from Waterloo Region to make it onto the list. It joins 32 others from Ontario among the top 100. Food lovers willing to take a short trip down Highway 401 will find 23 spots from Toronto alone on that list – including two of the top five.
The places that made it were chosen by a panel of 160 judges made up of a mix of “informed culinary enthusiasts, food writers and critics, chefs, restaurateurs and other food-service professionals,” according to reports.
“Each judge is asked to submit a list of their top 10 restaurant experiences of the previous year, ranking them with consideration to service, decor, depth of the cellar and – above all else – food quality,” it said.
The number one spot went to Restaurant Pearl Morissette in Jordan Station. Set amongst “17 hectares of vineyard, farmland and vegetable gardens,” it was praised for taking Ontario wine-country cooking up to levels comparable with some of the world’s greatest wine regions.
