13 charges laid after Cambridge man runs into river away from police

What started as a report of an assault in Cambridge quickly turned into a dramatic scene when a man allegedly ran into the Grand River trying to avoid the police.

Around 4:30 on Saturday afternoon, the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) got a call about an assault near Coronation Boulevard.

Officers tracked down a vehicle connected to the incident and stopped it in a nearby parking lot. But just as the car was coming to a stop, police say a male suspect jumped out from the passenger side and took off toward the river.

He went straight into the water. Officers tried to pull him out but eventually had to wait for help from the Cambridge Fire Department to get him back onto dry land.

An official with the fire department told 570 News Radio they carried out “a technical water rescue” using their airboat.

Following this, police said a 34-year-old man from Cambridge is now facing 13 charges, including assault, assault with a weapon, breaking conditions of his release order, and mischief under $5,000.

The police confirmed to 570 News Radio that this all stemmed from a domestic dispute. The female victim suffered minor injuries after being hit by an object thrown by the accused.
