May 28, 1945 – April 22, 2026
We’re saddened to share that Kezia Mamkwa (nee Winter), aged 80 from Kingfisher Lake First Nation, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 22, 2026 at 7:56pm. She was at home with her family around her during her last moments.
Kezia went before us after her husband Jeremiah “Jerry” Mamakwa; son Hosea Mamakwa; brother Noah Winter; daughter-in-law Pearl Mamakwa; and grandchildren Kristen Sakakeep and Kevin Mamakwa.
She leaves behind children Esther Sakakeep, Jonathan Mamakwa, MPP Sol Mamakwa and Zack Mamakwa; siblings Mary Lou Winter, Jemima Anderson and Micah Winter. There are also many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other family members. We really appreciate all the prayers, love and support everyone has shown.
Kezia cared deeply for her family and community. She played a key role in the Kingfisher Lake First Nation Health Team long before there was a clinic building. Proud of her Native roots, she shared Traditional Teachings with younger folks. She loved being outdoors – trapping, fishing or hunting with her husband – plus looking after camps and cooking good meals for everyone. Her big heart and kindness will be missed but the lessons she gave us will stick around forever.
A Wake Service for Kezia will take place in Thunder Bay on Saturday, April 25, 2026 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the WESTFORT CHAPEL, located at 420 West Gore Street at James. Father Gordon Holroyd will lead the service.
Kezia’s body will then be taken back home to Kingfisher Lake First Nation where a Funeral Service is set for Monday, April 27, 2026 at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church with Bishop Lydia Mamakwa officiating. Burial follows in the Community Cemetery.
