For the first time in more than ten years, Labour has lost its hold on control – but they’re still the biggest party.
Cameron Holloway, the leader, was among six Labour councillors who lost their seats to the Greens amid wider losses for Labour across the country.
The Greens have jumped up to 12 councillors in Cambridge, overtaking the Liberal Democrats as the second biggest group, with Labour holding onto 17 seats.
Naomi Bennett, leader of Cambridge City Council’s Green group, thanked voters and campaigners and said it was down to “extremely positive campaigns”.
She added that they are “very proud” residents “came out and voted for hope not hate in overwhelming numbers on Thursday”.
She commented: “Cambridge residents voted for change and we will deliver.
“Our new councillors will work hard alongside our existing Green team to protect and improve local services and make sure they run efficiently for people in Cambridge.”
The Greens also noted that they narrowly missed winning a seat on South Cambridgeshire District Council in Shelford by just nine votes.
In Histon and Impington, they came second too, with the Liberal Democrats less than 200 votes ahead.
Miranda Fyfe, their candidate there, said this result proves there’s “no risk of Reform gaining seats” if voters back the Greens instead.
She said: “We’ve been saying for months it would be between Lib Dems and Greens here, with no chance of Reform winning seats in Shelford or Histon-and we were right!
“South Cambridgeshire Greens will keep pushing for real hope and change locally while holding Lib Dems accountable to deliver results for people and planet-not profit or greed.”
