January 10, 1939- May 3, 2026
Maureen Ryan Martin passed away quietly on May 3, 2026, at Hogarth Riverview Manor in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
She was born in Sioux Lookout and moved around a bit with her family before they settled in Fort William. As a kid, she helped out at the family’s store, Capital Grocery, right at the corner of Cummings and Norah Streets. That’s where she really learned how to work hard – something that stuck with her all her life. One of her proudest moments was being named Miss Lakehead Chapter Credit Union – a title that showed how much people respected her and how connected she was to the community. She met Reno at a wedding when they both stood up for friends. They ended up sharing 34 years together until he passed away. She used to joke that “she married him for his car.”
Maureen had lots of jobs over the years that showed off both her skills and ties to the area. She worked for the Bishop of the Diocese of Fort William, at Chappel’s Department Store, with the Ministry of Natural Resources at Thunder Bay Tree Farm, and even ran an antique business herself. Eventually, she made a name as a real estate agent and broker – winning awards before retiring.
She was very involved locally too. Her interest in antiques came in handy when she organized yearly antique shows to raise money for Bethammi Nursing Home and Community Living Thunder Bay. She also volunteered during events like the 1995 World Nordic Ski Championships and the 1996 Scotties Tournament of Hearts; plus spent many years helping out at the Folklore Festival and served as a union steward with OPSEU.
When not working or volunteering, Maureen loved traveling across Europe, Mexico and the U. S., playing slot machines now and then, Friday night dinners with her sisters, plus summers spent at their camp on One Island Lake. Her Catholic faith was steady throughout everything. But above all else it was her grandchildren and great-grandson who brought her true happiness.
She was predeceased by her husband Reno Martin; parents Joseph Victor and Elizabeth Ryan; brothers Victor (and sister-in-law Theone) and Michael; plus sister Margaret Reynolds (and brother-in-law James).
Maureen leaves behind daughter Michele; sons Greg (Brenda) and Harley (Lindsay); grandchildren Michael Clark, Ian Clark (Ally), Alex, Cas, Nathan, Emily, Zachary, and Avery; great-grandson Mason Clark; sister Colleen Marchant (Robert); sister-in-law Marlene Ryan along with many nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Maureen lived a rich life grounded in faith, hard work, and real connections with those around her. She’ll be remembered fondly by everyone who knew her.
The funeral service will take place Monday May 25th ,2026 , at 11:00 am , at Sargent And Son Funeral Chapel ,21 North Court Street , Thunder Bay , Ontario.
The family wants to thank everyone on unit three south at Hogarth Riverview Manor for their care & kindness shown to Maureen.
If anyone wishes, to honor Maureen ’s memory donations can be sent to Diabetes Canada or Heart And Stroke Foundation Of Canada.
