Flora Mary Martyn (née Kuurila), who was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario, passed away quietly on May 3, 2026 at the age of 92 with her family close by. She was preceded in death by her husband Melvin (Bob) Martyn; her son Kenneth (Ken) Martyn; her parents Waino and Aino Kuurila; and her brothers and sisters Arnie, Thelma, Eila, Norma, Faye, Alvin, and Kenny.
She leaves behind her children: Carol Mac Neil (Bernie), Kelly (Shelley), Shelley, and Cindy; along with her daughter-in-law Melody (Ken). Her grandchildren Steven, Kurtis, Jason (Erica), Erika (Scott), Bradley (Brittany), Stephen, Tori (Maggie), and Janelle remember her fondly. She also had great-grandchildren Emerson, Finley, Madelyn, Hadley, Wyatt, Zoey, and Nathan who will carry on her spirit.
For four decades Flora worked as a school bus driver-a job she took pride in as she safely drove kids for generations. Besides that she helped quietly alongside Bob with their cattle business. Some of the simple joys she loved were playing cribbage games, knitting or crocheting gifts for family and friends, and piecing together puzzles. But most of all Flora loved being with family. Her house was the gathering spot where Sunday dinners at five o’clock became a special tradition everyone looked forward to.
Flora will be remembered as a steady presence who cared deeply for those around her and made ordinary moments warm and meaningful. Her family plans to keep up those traditions that meant so much to her.
The family wants to thank the staff at Pioneer Ridge for their kindness and care during Flora’s last days. Following Flora’s wishes there won’t be a formal funeral service; instead there will be a private celebration with close family later on.
