A man has died and a woman was briefly hospitalized after a fire broke out at a motel in Cambridge.
The incident occurred around 9:45 a. m. on Sunday when the Cambridge Fire Department got a call about flames in a second-floor unit at the Super 8 Motel on Hespeler Road.
Officials say firefighters from four stations arrived quickly and managed to put out the fire. Two people were rescued from the unit where the fire started.
Both were taken to hospital; sadly, one of them later died from their injuries.
Waterloo Regional Police identified the man who passed away as being 53 years old.
The other person, an adult woman whose name wasn’t released, received treatment for her injuries and has since been discharged.
“On behalf of Cambridge Fire, I extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this very difficult time,” said Brad Churchill, deputy fire chief with the Cambridge Fire Department.
The fire was contained to just that single unit and isn’t believed to be suspicious in any way.
Emergency responders-including investigators from Cambridge Fire, Waterloo Regional Police, and Ontario’s Fire Marshal’s Office-were at the scene Sunday evening trying to figure out what caused it.
A statement from regional police says they believe it was an accident.
The damage is estimated at about $35,000.
