Police believe GRCI weapons call was a swatting case

Police have cleared out a Kitchener high school along with several nearby schools after hold and secures and a lockdown were put in place on Monday.

Waterloo regional police responded to a weapons call in Kitchener, which led to Grand River Collegiate Institute (GRCI) being locked down “as a safety precaution.”

The hold and secure orders at Crestview Public School, Chicopee Hills Public School, and Stanley Park Public School were also lifted.

Officials now say the whole thing was a swatting call-that’s basically a fake tip meant to get police rushing over. They shared in a press release that officers got the report around 9:20 a. m. saying someone had a gun inside GRCI.

“Through investigation, it was determined that the reported incident had not occurred,” police said.

The statement also mentions that they believe the call was aimed specifically at GRCI and that the investigation is still going on.

ONGOING INVESTIGATION:

There is an increased police presence in the area of Indian Road and Heritage Drive in Kitchener for a weapons-related call.
