Fresh images have been released showing how the promised sports pavilion at Darwin Green might appear. BDW Cambridgeshire and North West Consortium of Landowners have put forward a planning application to build this new facility. The Darwin Green site is located northwest of Cambridge along Huntingdon Road.

Back in 2013, outline permission was given to build more than 1,500 homes on this city edge development, alongside a primary school and community spaces. One condition of that approval was to include a sports pavilion. The plan is for a single-storey building next to already approved playing fields.

Inside, the pavilion will offer four changing rooms that can each hold around 20 people; four shower areas with three standing showers plus one accessible shower; toilets; and an official’s changing room with its own shower space. There’s also set to be a large club room with kitchen and storage areas. Instead of gas heating, they plan to use an air source heat pump for warmth.

In documents sent to Cambridge City Council as part of this application it said: “It is suggested that the building design presented in this report will provide an exciting, high quality and welcoming civic building which sits well in the context of the local centre and uses robust materials and contemporary detailing to ensure longevity.

“The building will provide a feature in the central park which engenders a sense of ownership and pride in the community. The building has been designed to work hard inside and out. As well as the generous but efficient internal layout, every elevation provides a community function. These include a recycling centre, bike parking, integrated seating and a covered external terrace.”
