Ontario announces over $35M for community centre builds, upgrades

CAMBRIDGE, ONT. – The Ontario government has just announced another round of funding for community centre projects around the province, totaling about $35.8 million.

The City of Cambridge will receive $19.5 million to build a brand-new multi-purpose recreation complex.

This 112,000-square-foot facility will include an aquatics centre with a 10-lane, 25-metre pool, plus a warm water leisure and therapy pool. It’ll also have three gyms built to FIBA standards, an indoor track for walking and running, fitness areas, rooms for various activities, a concession stand, and even a public library.

Besides that, the province is putting money into:

$1 million for Cambridge to renovate and expand the 52-year-old Cambridge Preston Arena. Plans include making it more accessible, adding a second ice pad so tournaments can be held there, and creating new spaces for non-ice programs. $1 million for North Dumfries Township to fix up the Ayr Community Centre by replacing its roof, updating eavestroughs and downspouts, all aimed at extending the building’s lifespan.

A few days after this announcement, the government revealed it’s also putting $12.2 million toward building a new Russell Township Recreation Complex and upgrading three other community centres nearby.

The new complex will feature a six-lane indoor pool that’s 25 metres long, a 10,000-square-foot hall for community events and three ice rinks used for hockey, figure skating, broomball and ringette among other sports.

Additionally, three more projects got funding:

Clarence-Rockland city is getting $360,700 to swap out the HVAC system at their arena. Hawkesbury town will receive $866,500 to replace the roof at Robert Hartley Sports Complex. The Nation Municipality secured $962,500 to help refurbish St-Isidore Arena.

All these projects fall under the $200 million Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund – a provincewide program focused on refreshing local facilities while boosting economy growth and encouraging people in Ontario to stay active and healthy,” said the release.
