April 27, 1934 – January 27, 2026
Adele Rea Archer, who lived in Thunder Bay for many years, passed away quietly in Sault Ste. Marie at age 91.
She was born in Winnipeg and grew up on Mc Kenzie Island near Red Lake. After finishing high school, she went to the University of Western Ontario and graduated in 1957. Later, she attended Toronto Teachers’ College.
After completing her studies, Adele returned to northwestern Ontario and taught French and History at several high schools in Fort William and Port Arthur. Soon after, she became a teacher at Fort William Collegiate Institute where she spent most of her career until retiring in 1994.
Many students remember her lively teaching style-she hardly ever sat down during class and always got involved in discussions. Thousands can vouch for how engaged she made learning feel!
She is survived by three children: Nancy Jane (Kari), Susan (Doug), and John (Kim). Also left behind are six grandchildren: Madelaine, Lauren, William, Benjamin, Emily, and Gillian; plus a nephew named Timothy. She was predeceased by her husband Lawrie; sisters Grace and Marjorie; brothers Lawrence, Albert and Fred; as well as four Black Labrador Retrievers named Simon, Bentley, Tess and Katy.
Adele had a lot of interests outside school and gave her time freely to causes she cared about. Every April she’d sell daffodils for the Canadian Cancer Society where she also served on the local board-and drove patients to their appointments when needed. She helped raise money for UNICEF at F. W. C. I., was on the Magnus Theatre board, part of Anglican Church Women of Canada (ACW), served with St. Paul’s Anglican Church Altar Guild, volunteered with The Salvation Army, and supported Shelter House too.
She also enjoyed being part of the Canadian Federation of University Women along with some close friends who shared lots of laughs over Christmas eggnog!
Her family feels sad she’s gone but are grateful for such a full life. Special thanks go out to the staff at Sault Area Hospital for their kindness. And an extra shout-out to everyone on the Echo Bay wing at Extendicare Maple View-they made sure she was comfortable during her last days with great care.
A memorial service is planned for Monday April 6 at 11 a. m., held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church located at 808 Ridgeway Street in Thunder Bay. Everyone is welcome to join.
If you’d like to honor her memory with flowers please consider donating instead to the Canadian Cancer Society.
