Seija Noponen - Obituary - Northwest Ontario

Mar. 9, 1947 – Dec. 25, 2025

Mrs. Seija Liisa Noponen (nee Louko), aged 78, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Christmas Day, Thursday December 25, 2025.

Seija was born on March 9, 1947 in Ylistaro, Finland. She came to Canada as a young girl in 1957 with her parents and siblings. They arrived at Pier 21 in Halifax before taking a train to Port Arthur. She went to Five Mile School while growing up on Government Rd., where she learned English and adapted to life alongside other Finnish immigrants. After a short time back in Finland with her family, she returned for good in 1966 and stayed here ever since. Seija married Oiva Noponen, her true love, on October 18, 1969. Even after he passed away, she kept him close to her heart. In younger days she worked as a waitress at Aarnio’s then the Shoreline Hotel before becoming a stay-at-home mom – something that suited her perfectly and came naturally. She liked knitting and crocheting, keeping up with news on her tablet, and traveling with family. Seija was also a dedicated member of the Seventh-day Adventist church. A private woman by nature, she enjoyed quiet hobbies like gardening. She took great care of her flowers and berry bushes and really valued her home and family above all else.

She leaves behind daughters Liisa & Maria (Samuel), niece Airi from Thunder Bay; brother Heikki Louko (Marja-Liisa), niece and nephew Katri & Kari Louko along with their families in Finland plus many cousins and relatives spread out across Canada, Finland and Sweden.

She was predeceased by husband Oiva on December 29, 2002; parents Elsa & Jaakko Louko; sister Vieno along with husband Mauno Teikari; as well as other family members.

The family wants to say a big thank you to Dr. Olexiy Aseyev and his whole team for the kindness and care they showed Seija over recent months. Without your faith in her things might have been very different – we can’t thank you enough for what you did for all of us! We felt truly lucky having you as her doctor! Thanks also go out to St. Joseph’s Care Group rehabilitation program – Neuro Day outpatient gave our mom purpose again after her stroke and she loved showing everyone what she could do. Kristi SLP helped our mother find her voice after the stroke too – your gentle support pushed her to keep trying even when words were hard to find. Kristin Adams Stroke Navigator – you meant so much more than just help; you saw us at our worst moments but stayed by our side with friendship that won’t be forgotten. And finally thanks to VON Tara whose weekly visits meant everything both to Mom and us – we’ll always appreciate the respect you showed while caring for her time together was special.

Funeral services for Mrs. Seija Noponen will take place Tuesday January 6th ,2026 at10:30AM at EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL located at299 Waverley St., Algoma area. Rev. Jari Lahtinen will lead service followed by burial at Riverside Cemetery. Visitation happens Monday evening from6:00PM -8:00PM there too.

If you’d like to honor Seija’s memory please send flowers since gardening wasn’t possible last summer due to health issues. Flowers surrounded what mattered most – herself , her home, and family.
