1936-2025
Buddy Whitney, 89, from Thunder Bay, Ont., passed away peacefully on December 27th. He is now reunited with his wife Roberta, who passed away in 2013.
Buddy was a quiet and kind man who appreciated the little things in life. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Every now and then he liked going on a small gambling trip, having coffee with lifelong buddies, or hanging out with neighbors who shared his love for feeding squirrels. He also enjoyed time with his old car club pals and could often be found in his garage working on vintage cars – a place where he felt happy and busy. This hobby was something he shared with his son Bruce.
He was known for being hardworking and spent many years as a millwright at Great Lakes.
Back in the day, Buddy was a skilled hockey player and never lost interest in the game. That love continued as both his son and granddaughters took to playing hockey themselves.
A lot of folks remember Buddy’s fondness for Louis L’amour western novels, followed by years of watching classic western movies on TV. He could watch those old films over and over without getting tired of them. Family members and staff at Hogarth Riverview Manor probably know every John Wayne movie by heart because of him.
But above all else, Buddy treasured his family deeply and kept close ties with his brothers and sisters. He loved sharing laughs with each one of them. He was predeceased by siblings Merlyn Whitney, Royden Whitney, Donna Johnson, and Arnott Whitney. When Buddy’s health started to fail, he moved to Dryden to live with Mary-Ann and Bruce where he became part of the Skillen family circle along with Gus Kropf; here he found happiness again. He always loved hearing stories about what everyone in the family was up to and took great pride in all the adventures and achievements of his granddaughters. Conversations with their partners meant a lot to him too; he thought highly of them all and welcomed them warmly into the family.
He will be remembered by his son Bruce, daughter-in-law Mary-Ann, granddaughters Alyssa Whitney (Nelson) and Haylee Mac Rae (Jake). His many nieces and nephews plus Mary-Ann’s relatives will also miss him dearly. Buddy loved spending time with everyone around him; his gentle way and kind soul touched all who knew him.
Cremation has been carried out according to Buddy’s wishes.
A small gathering to celebrate Buddy’s life will be held sometime later.
If friends wish to honor him through donations, they can give to the Dryden Go Getters Activity Center – a spot where Buddy enjoyed socializing during Memory Cafe events.
