There’s an exciting plan underway for a new sports centre that will benefit both a Cambridge school and its community. The planning approval was secured by national property firm Carter Jonas on behalf of Perse Upper School.

The facility, covering 2,706 square metres, will be built right inside the school’s current campus on Hills Road, south of the city centre. It’ll feature a swimming pool, a sports hall, a climbing wall, and changing rooms, plus parking spaces for cars and bikes along with some landscaping.

Cambridge City Council gave their go-ahead just this month. A contractor has already been chosen and work should begin soon once all pre-construction requirements get approved by the council.

Colin Brown from Carter Jonas said: “Achieving planning consent for this new facility was challenging as it displaces a protected playing field which is technically in conflict with the Local Plan. However, the opportunity for both the Perse school and local residents to benefit from some excellent new facilities was seen as a substantial benefit, both in terms of education and health and well-being.

“As such, we were pleased to make a strong case for the proposal, and we are delighted that it was positively received by the city council.” Alison Shakespeare, bursar of Perse school, added: “We are extremely pleased to have achieved planning permission for this exciting project.

“Carter Jonas have been involved from the outset, and their help and advice has been invaluable.” A community access agreement will be put in place through planning conditions so that locals can use these facilities either by joining local sports clubs or simply paying per visit.

Overall, the community will get about 45 hours of access each week, and during school holidays, this increases to around 80 hours or more.
