Plans got approved to build a new sports centre at a Cambridge school. Outside of The Perse Upper School’s hours, the new swimming pool and sports hall will be open for people in the community. But, the climbing wall won’t be available to the public.
The school submitted their application for the new building to Cambridge City Council. A school representative spoke at a Planning Committee meeting on Wednesday, October 5, saying that although the school is quite big, it currently only has one sports hall.
They explained this means some pupils have to limit indoor sports options certain years because there isn’t enough space. Some year groups don’t get access to the hall at all. Also, they don’t have a swimming pool yet but are “extremely keen” to add one and have agreed on times when it’ll be open for community use outside school hours.

Councillors were pleased that both the swimming pool and sports hall would be accessible for community use. Councillor Katie Thornburrow called this access an “incredibly important part” of the plan.
On the other hand, Councillor Katie Porrer said she found it “disappointing” that people wouldn’t be able to use the climbing wall too. Officials said there’s no real demand locally right now for a climbing wall and insurance concerns also play a part, though they might revisit this if things change later on. When put to vote, committee members approved the plans.
