ARU has already promised to “showcase the sustainability principles embedded in our teaching and research”.
This funding will be used to upgrade the pipework at the Cambridge campus and install smart sub-meters, along with various smart sensors for showers and toilets.
The goal is to cut down water use, spot leaks early, and encourage students and staff to be more water-wise.
The Environment Agency (EA) will keep track of how much water is saved.
James Rolfe, ARU’s chief operating officer, said: “We are keenly aware of the water stress experienced by Cambridge and the wider region, which will only intensify as our climate changes.”
