KOVARIK, Ilona (nee Borutova) - Obituary - Orillia

September 25, 1957 – January 12, 2026

Passed away quietly in a Newmarket, Ontario hospital after a sudden fight with cancer. She is survived by her children, Jane Kovarikova (Jeffrey Roode) and Daniel Kovarik (Fhria Kovarik nee Punzalan), along with grandchildren Lincoln and Isabelle Kovarik. Also remembered by many friends and extended family. She was predeceased by her mother, Marketa Boruta (nee Greta Rozena Hurcikova) who died November 28, 2005, and her father Evzen Boruta who passed May 18, 2021.

Ilona was born in Podborany, Czechoslovakia and came to Canada as a political refugee in November 1979 seeking freedom and a better life. Her journey was marked by courage, hardship, and loss but she worked hard to make sure the next generations had chances to grow.

She had a big heart and was very generous. Ilona loved being creative-music, culture especially painting were close to her soul. Among her strongest traits were her sharp wit, calm endurance, and practical outlook on life.

A special thanks goes out to Out of the Cold in Bradford, Ontario for their support during Ilona’s later years. Also much appreciation to doctors Katie Mulhern and Michael Liauw for their care that allowed her to pass peacefully as she wished.
