December 31, 1963 – April 20, 2026
It is with great sadness that the family of Daniela Erika Nekuliak (née Daberer) shares news of her passing on Monday, April 20th, 2026. She was 62 years old.
Daniela was born in Port Arthur and spent her childhood on Lakeshore Drive, where she had many joyful moments with family and friends. She was known for being kind, generous, reliable, and having a good sense of humor. Daniela met Owen Nekuliak back in Grade 1 at Mc Kenzie School – that’s where their close friendship started, which grew into love and a life together lasting 57 years. They got married in 1988 and lived for quite some time in Shuniah before moving closer to town (Port Arthur). Daniela put her heart into their home life, helped run the family welding business alongside Owen, and was always ready to help others whenever needed.
She loved planning and enjoying special get-togethers with those she cared about and traveling to see her children and grandchildren. The outdoors were also dear to her – fishing, hunting, camping, hiking – plus she was a great cook and gardener. Daniela enjoyed crafts like sewing too and had a soft spot for dogs and animals.
Daniela was preceded in death by her father Kurt Daberer; sister-in-law Kelly Daberer (Volker); as well as her parents-in-law Wasyl “Bill” and Violet Nekuliak.
She leaves behind her husband Owen of 38 years; her mother Inge (Kurt) Daberer; children Chris (Sean) Daberer, Victoria (Shane) Nekuliak, Erika (Tanner) Nekuliak; along with grandchildren Deegan, Abygail, and Annabelle Gatehouse. Also mourning are siblings Peter, Volker (Val), Erich (Lori) Daberer; brother-in-law Brad (Diane) Nekuliak; plus many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A Celebration of Life will be held later on. Instead of flowers people who want to can make donations in Daniela’s memory to the Ontario SPCA & Humane Society (please select the Thunder Bay District). This supports care for animals who need it most.
The funeral service arrangements have been handled by EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL at 299 Waverley Street near Algoma.
