Where to watch local Waterloo Region debates

Rogers TV is teaming up with local groups to cover the candidates running for seats at Queen’s Park.

The Local Campaign will stream debates for ridings including Waterloo, Cambridge, Kitchener Centre, Kitchener Conestoga, Kitchener South Hespeler, Perth-Wellington, Brantford-Brant, and Guelph.

The debates in the two Cambridge ridings are done with help from Citizens for Cambridge, a volunteer group. Filming these and putting them online makes it easier for more people to watch.

“We’ll use our resources as as much as we can to try to expose that opportunity to the community so that more people get to know more about the different candidates and and make a more informed decision on who they want representing them at Queens Park,” group founder Dan Clements in a video posted to the Rogers TV You Tube channel.

Mike Farwell from the 570 News Radio Mike Farwell Show will be hosting the debates.

Clements mentioned he doesn’t expect candidates here to go beyond their limits; still, there are plenty of local topics folks want their MPPs focused on. Things like encampments, homelessness, and housing problems came up often.

Making these debates available online also aims to encourage more people to vote. Turnout in Ontario’s 2022 election hit an all-time low with only 43.5 percent of eligible voters casting ballots.

“The number one item is voting,” Clement said. “The turn out for elections, not just in Cambridge but everywhere, is abysmally low and that’s unfortunate. It’s the democratic deficit that people talk about a small percentage of the population really elect our leaders.”
