Speed cameras in Waterloo Region

You’ll see more speed cameras showing up in neighbourhoods around the region later this year.

A report going to councillors at the Sustainability, Infrastructure, And Development Committee suggests some updates to the region’s traffic bylaw, including adding 15 new Community Safety Areas.

The spots being added are:

Fairway Road North near Chicopee Hills Public School, Kitchener Westmount Road East at Forest Hill Public School, Kitchener Weber Street East near Eastwood Collegiate Institute, Kitchener Bridge Street West at Bridgeport Public School, Kitchener University Avenue West at Resurrection Catholic Secondary School, Kitchener Fischer-Hallman Road at Forest Heights Collegiate Institute, Kitchener Weber Street East at Sheppard Public School, Kitchener Dundas Street North at Manchester Public School, Cambridge Water Street North at Galt Collegiate Institute, Cambridge Maple Grove Road at Ecole Secondaire Catholique Pere-Rene-De-Galinee, Cambridge Myers Road at Monsignor Doyle Catholic Secondary School and Cambridge Christian School, Cambridge Hergott Road at Countryside Christian School, Wellesley Township Manser Road near Linwood Public School, Wellesley Township Erb Street West at Kitchener-Waterloo Bilingual School, Waterloo Weber Street North at St. David Catholic Secondary School, Waterloo

“The proposed changes aim to enhance safety and reduce traffic-related risks for vulnerable road users, particularly in school zones, by encouraging slower travel speeds in these critical areas,” reads the report.

Other suggestions include adding and expanding school zones and changing speed limits. Two new school zones would be created in Woolwich Township-one on Arthur Street North near North Woolwich Parochial School and another on Katherine Street by West Montrose Parochial School.

They’re also proposing lowering speed limits from 60 km/h down to 40 km/h on Fairway Road in Kitchener and from 50 km/h down to 40 km/h on Maple Grove Road in Cambridge as well as Manser Road in Wellesley.

Some boundary extensions are recommended too – on Victoria Street South by Sandhills Public School and St. Dominic Savio Catholic School in Kitchener; plus Snyder’s Road West near Sir Adam Beck Public School and Waterloo Oxford District Secondary School in Baden.

The staff want these changes to start May 26th before installing the speed cameras sometime during the third quarter of this year.

The report will be discussed on Tuesday.
