CAMBRIDGE – Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan, Massachusetts State Police Colonel Geoffrey Noble and Acting Police Commissioner Pauline Wells have confirmed they are actively investigating a shooting that happened today on Memorial Drive in Cambridge between River Street and Pleasant Street Extension.
Around 1:00 p. m., Cambridge Police got a call from Boston Police saying someone-later identified as the person involved in this shooting-might be in Cambridge acting strangely. Boston Police also mentioned that the suspect was thought to be carrying a rifle.
Officers from both Cambridge Police and Massachusetts State Police responded to Memorial Drive. When the State Police arrived, they encountered an active shooter situation. The suspect was on foot, moving east along the road, reportedly holding an assault-style rifle and firing erratically at cars on the street.
The suspect allegedly shot two men who were each inside separate vehicles before being confronted by a Massachusetts State Police Trooper and a civilian who legally carried a firearm. Even after being confronted, the suspect kept firing, hitting the police cruiser. Both the trooper and civilian returned fire, hitting the suspect multiple times in his arms and legs.
The suspect received medical care at the scene from officers before being taken to a hospital in Boston. The two victims-who don’t appear to know him-were hospitalized with serious injuries that threaten their lives.
Initial reports show around 60 rounds were fired very quickly during this dangerous event which took place during a busy afternoon when lots of people were driving, walking, biking, or rowing nearby.
The man involved has been named Tyler Brown, 46 years old from Boston. He’s currently under hospital custody and is expected to face charges including two counts of armed assault with intent to kill along with weapons offenses.
This investigation is ongoing with efforts from Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Massachusetts State Police, and Cambridge Police working together. Anyone who has information or videos related to today’s incident is encouraged to contact State Police Detectives at 781-897-6600.
