City of Cambridge Implements Police Body-Worn Camera Program

The City of Cambridge is excited to share that it has finished rolling out the Body-Worn Camera (BWC) Program for the Cambridge Police Department. This marks a big move toward boosting openness, responsibility, and trust between officers and the people they serve.

Back in March, the Department said they’d start training officers on how to use Body-Worn Cameras. By early April, almost every sworn officer – from Command Staff and Supervisors to Patrol Officers and Detectives – had been trained and given body cameras to wear while working.

This program reflects the City’s ongoing focus on keeping everyone safe. It comes after careful planning, policy work based on national examples, and solid training practices. For two years now, the department has shaped a program that balances strict accountability with respect for civil rights.

The cameras are made by Axon, a top name across the country in body-worn camera tech. Alongside this, Cambridge Police will use Axon’s digital evidence system to make storing, finding, and managing videos easier – which helps speed up handling cases. Officers get thorough training so they can use these cameras right and follow all department rules.

The new rules clearly explain when and how cameras should be used while making sure people trust that videos are treated carefully and honestly.

The policy covers important points like:

• When To Turn On Cameras: Clear instructions about activating body cams during police stops, arrests, or other key moments.
• Handling And Keeping Data Safe: Strict steps to securely store footage so only approved staff can access it.
• Being Open With The Public: Rules for sharing videos according to laws so policing stays transparent.
• Respecting Privacy: Balancing openness with protecting privacy-especially in sensitive calls like domestic violence incidents.

Some main benefits of this new camera program include:

• More Transparency: Videos help create honest records of police interactions with community members.
• Greater Accountability: Footage supports investigations by clarifying what really happened during encounters, which helps keep public confidence high.
• Building Trust With The Community: By starting this program, the department shows it’s serious about open communication and being accountable-key to better relationships with residents.

“The introduction of body cameras is an important step in our ongoing efforts to build trust and strengthen partnerships between our officers and the community we serve,” said Commissioner Christine Elow, Cambridge Police Department. “This program not only enhances the safety of both officers and the public, but it also ensures that we maintain the highest standards of transparency and accountability by ensuring independent verification of incidents, while providing critical evidence in investigations. We know that trust is earned through actions. This program is another way we are working to maintain that trust while upholding the highest standards of policing. I have great confidence that the adoption of body cameras will have a lasting, positive impact on public safety and relations with the community.”

“This is an important moment for our city,” said Cambridge Mayor E. Denise Simmons. “The implementation of body-worn cameras is about strengthening trust between the Cambridge community and the officers who serve it. This program is part of our larger commitment to public safety, transparency, and accountability.”

“We recognize that public trust in law enforcement is built on accountability,” said Cambridge City Manager Yi-An Huang. “The launch of body-worn cameras demonstrates our commitment to ensuring officers and residents alike have confidence in the integrity of policing in Cambridge. I am grateful for the collaboration between our Police Department, City Council, City leadership, and the community in making this initiative a reality.”

The City of Cambridge plans to involve residents throughout this rollout phase too. Over coming months there will be several chances for people to learn about how BWCs work; ask questions; get informed about their use.
