Business owners in Eddington appreciate the strong community vibe but wish more folks knew about the great shops here

Eddington is the newest neighborhood popping up on the outskirts of Cambridge, designed with modern sustainable living in mind. Since it opened back in 2017, it’s not just drawn people to live there but quite a few businesses have set up shop too.

Local business owners say it’s a “peaceful” spot to work with pretty much everything residents might need close by “under one roof.” Matt Hollywood from Outspoken Cycles pointed out how much focus there is on building a real sense of community.

He said: “It’s really vibrant. There’s lots of diverse families, lots of young school children. This place is just growing all the time and expanding. It’s really good.

“I love the convenience. There’s a Sainsbury’s. You’ve got Dulcedo if you want to grab a coffee and La Pizzica if you want to grab a pizza. Green Nest is the green grocers. Really we’ve got everything under one roof, everything is accommodated for.”

Besides food options, Eddington also hosts a Pilates studio, hair salons, and a skin care clinic. There’s even its own hotel-the Hyatt Centric-with its own restaurant plus a heated rooftop bar that offers views over the area; locals and guests both can enjoy it.

Adam Burrell manages the Hyatt Centric hotel and appreciates that while Eddington feels tucked away from Cambridge’s busy center, it’s still easy enough to get to when commuting. He said: “It’s a really peaceful place to work and is really nicely organised. It’s not overly busy like the hustle and bustle of central Cambridge. It’s really nice to be able to cater for all of the locals. It’s a pleasure to be the one central place.

“As a new and smaller community, it just has that really nice friendly neighbourhood vibe about it. As a person who has to commute into the area, it’s a very easy commute into Eddington.”

Autumn Valente runs La Pizzica located in the square and highlighted how close-knit things feel around here-she gets to build solid connections not just within Eddington but also with people from nearby villages. The suburb draws visitors “from all walks of life.”

She added residents take pride in their neighborhood too: “I love the area because people are quite curious about it. It’s quite new. The buildings are all very different. There’s been loads of thought put into many parts of architecture so people are proud, especially those who live here. We get plenty of locals bringing friends from Cambridge who want to check out our pizzeria or just see what this place is like. Everyone wants to show off their little corner.”

Mrs Valente says she’s “really happy” with how things are shaping up around here but hopes more shops will open soon so there’ll be more buzz at market square-and she wishes more people knew about what Eddington offers.

She added: “I think it surprises us how many people still don’t know about Eddington. So many would come down saying ‘I had no idea this was here.’ I guess we need better awareness that this isn’t just housing-it has retail spots too.”
