Cambridge road restriction bad for business, shopkeeper says

Besides fewer customers, Mr Arain felt the restriction was causing traffic jams on the city side of the bridge.

“You can almost taste the smog and the petrol fumes,” he said.

“We used to leave the windows and doors open, but now you need to close them, particularly the ones close to the junction.”

Cambridgeshire County Council said it had handed out about 100 penalty charge notices daily over three weeks starting 13 March, after cameras were switched back on following a burst water main repair.

They added they wouldn’t say anything about how this bus gate restriction affected things until after local elections.

The council first banned most cars from using the bridge in June 2020 for nearly a year and faced pushback when trying to bring those limits back.

After a consultation, a traffic regulation order came into effect in December and warning letters started going out in February.

Katie Hawks from Mill Road 4 People said busy streets do better with more walkers and cyclists because they actually spend more than drivers do.

She mentioned: “Nearly 2,000 more journeys were done on foot and by bike along Mill Road in March this year, up on last year, which has actually increased footfall.”
