In a nail-biting showdown on the River Thames, Cambridge pulled off an exciting double by beating their rivals Oxford in The Boat Race.

The Light Blues triumphed in the 168th edition of this historic event with a tight finish against their well-known university competitors.

At the same time, Cambridge’s women made it six wins running with a dominant performance over the full 4.25-mile course from Putney to Mortlake.

There was also a great family story in the men’s race as brothers Jasper and Ollie Parish enjoyed an unforgettable day. Jasper Parish – who last year coxed Cambridge’s women to victory – directed this year’s men’s boat to a thrilling win alongside his older brother Ollie.

“The rush of emotions as we got across the line, it was like nothing else,” said 19-year-old Jasper to BBC. “That was the fun of our lives and we will remember it for a long time.” His brother Ollie added: “We got tucked in away from the rough stuff. Jasper coxed an amazing race.”

Cambridge took control early with an aggressive push and managed to hold off Oxford’s late charge to win by just over a length despite tough conditions.

Their lead now stands at 86 wins compared to Oxford’s 81 overall, while Cambridge’s women extended their edge to 47 victories versus Oxford’s 30.

Ollie Boyne, president of Cambridge’s men’s boat club, was overjoyed seeing his team bounce back from last year’s loss. “It has been an incredible performance by the crews, it is a great sign for the club,” Boyne said happily.

“The conditions were really tricky but that was because of how strong the tide was – that unpredictability is what makes this race so special. It means everything to everyone involved after six months of hard work every single day.”
