Transport truck collision prompt OPP to issue icy road warning

Tuesday morning in Waterloo Region kicked off with a blowing snow alert and police cautioning about dangerously icy roads.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) posted on social media just after 1:30 a. m. about an accident involving two transport trucks near Highway 401 and Fountain Street South in Cambridge.

The update mentioned the crash occurred “during severe icy road conditions.”

They added a warning: “Motorists are strongly urged to avoid unnecessary travel. Be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.”

According to the OPP, the collision forced the closure of the Fountain Street on-ramp to Highway 401 eastbound for safety reasons and to let emergency crews work and clear vehicles.

Environment Canada issued a yellow alert Monday night for blowing snow, warning that visibility would be poor due to snow and wind gusts up to 70 km/h from the west.

The agency said “travel will likely be hazardous due to near-zero visibility.”

They expect up to 10 cm of snowfall but noted conditions should improve slowly Tuesday morning as winds calm down.
