CAMBRIDGE, Ontario – The Cambridge Centaurs U10 boys travel basketball team sure knows how to enjoy themselves both on and off the court. For most of these kids, it’s their very first year playing basketball-let alone travel ball-and the season has been full of picking up new skills, trying out drills, learning game plans, and making some great friends along the way.

The season kicked off strong even though only three players returned from last year’s U10 squad. They opened with a solid 35-9 win against Oxford Attack in Woodstock. After that came a tough loss to a powerful Brantford Hawks team and then a close defeat by Niagara. But the boys bounced back with a win over Halton Basketball. The season’s been mixed with wins and losses, but overall the U10 Centaurs have had more good days than bad ones. What’s stayed constant is these young players’ growing love for basketball and their commitment to cheering each other on. You’ll often see them giving teammates low fives during free throws or shouting “D-what?! Defense!” excitedly from the bench.

Diego Abrego (age 9), one of the Centaurs playing his first travel season, has been focused on improving his skills and putting them into play during games. He says, “I get to learn new things and then practice them in a game… I always try hard. I never give up.” Meanwhile, Mark Frayne-the head coach who’s also a dad of three and teaches at Jacob Hespeler Secondary School-stepped up to help grow his son Griffin’s passion for basketball along with all the other boys’. Looking back on this 2023/2024 season, Frayne shared: “I couldn’t ask for a more committed and enthusiastic group of kids. Each player has worked hard to develop their skills and they each bring a special dynamic to the team. I am very happy with how the team has progressed.”
