Cambridge United is about to join Wrexham as one of the League One clubs with its own documentary after signing a deal for three episodes with US network CBS Sports

A League One team has been called ‘the next Wrexham’ after landing their own documentary series.
Cambridge United, who are fighting relegation and sit 22nd in the league, revealed on Friday that they’ve agreed with US broadcaster CBS Sports to create an initial three-part series. The show will be full of drama since the U’s are seven points from safety, and filming for these 30-minute episodes will begin soon to capture the season’s final moments.
The club said in a statement: “The series will provide the club with the opportunity to share its story initially with a US and Canadian audience, with the potential for a further series, as well as the sale of rights worldwide. Filming will commence at the end of the 2024/25 season and will seek to capture the drama of the end of season on the pitch, whilst showcasing the club set against the iconic city of Cambridge through its supporters and stakeholders.”
This news has sparked comparisons between Cambridge and their League One rivals Wrexham, whose popularity has exploded since ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ aired. That show follows Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mc Elhenney after they bought Wrexham back in February 2021, with manager Phil Parkinson guiding them up two divisions in just two seasons.
Unlike Cambridge’s struggles, Wrexham currently sits third in League One aiming for yet another promotion. Many U’s fans shared their excitement on social media when hearing about this project, making lots of comparisons between both clubs.
One supporter wrote: “We’re the next Wrexham! Hold on tight it’s doing to be a one helluva ride!” Another added: “Does this mean we are going all Wrexham?” Meanwhile, someone else joked: “Wrexham, then Cambridge. Americans love a random British lower league club story.”

Another fan joked: “Do we get to sign Paul Mullin?” The star player for Wrexham-who’s scored 110 goals across all competitions-first made waves at Cambridge during 2020-21.
He scored 32 goals in 46 games for Cambridge and even had a stand named after him when helping them win promotion from League Two. But he turned down a new contract there and chose instead to join then-non-league side Wrexham in summer 2021 after their takeover by Reynolds and Mc Elhenney.
Since then Mullin has become well-known and even appeared alongside Reynolds briefly in last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine movie. Alex Tunbridge, CEO of Cambridge United hopes their documentary goes beyond these first three episodes and becomes popular on its own merit.
