Construction projects wrapped up on busy stretch of Highway 401

The Ontario government has shared some good news about two construction projects that have been a pain for drivers traveling between Kitchener and Cambridge.

They announced that the Grand River Bridges project and the King Street overpass rehab are both finished now, after years of work going back to 2020.

“Investments like the replacement of the Grand River bridges on Highway 401 and the ongoing work to build a new Highway 7 between Kitchener and Guelph are investments for residents and businesses in Kitchener and our broader region,” said Berry Vrbanovic, Mayor of Kitchener. “We are grateful to the province for its efforts to reduce gridlock, improve safety and ensure that commuters and goods can move more efficiently across Ontario’s Innovation Corridor.”

The province explained these projects were aimed at cutting down traffic jams and making travel quicker for thousands of drivers. Part of it involved adding more lanes on Highway 401, expanding from six lanes up to ten.

Back in 2023, they widened the stretch of the 401 in Cambridge between Highway 8 and Townline Road, putting in eight extra kilometres of lanes along that part.

“The completion of this bridge marks a major step forward for our community by paving the way for future highway expansions,” said Waterloo Mayor Dorothy Mc Cabe. “This update will not only ease congestion and save commuters valuable time, but it will also make travel safer for everyone.”

The Grand River Bridges carry traffic east-west through Waterloo Region, located between Homer Watson Boulevard and King Street interchanges. The province says these bridges will now support tens of thousands of vehicles every day – including lots of commercial trucks – helping keep people and goods moving smoothly.

“Replacing the Grand River bridge structures ensures this stretch of the 401 is ready for the growth and future projects coming to our region,” said Jess Dixon, MPP for Kitchener South-Hespeler. “It gives us the modern, reliable infrastructure that a high-volume corridor like this needs to keep people and goods moving.

Work is still underway on building out the Frederick Street bridge as part of widening Highway 7 between Kitchener and Guelph.
