Sylvia Pedwysocki - Obituary - Northwest Ontario

We are very sad to share that Sylvia Pedwysocki, our dear mother and Baba, passed away on February 16, 2026 (Family Day). Sylvia was born in Insinger, Saskatchewan on October 7, 1933 to her loving parents Frank and Mary Chubak. She married Michael, the love of her life, on June 13, 1953. They enjoyed their 40th wedding anniversary with family and close friends before Michael passed away. Together they raised four wonderful children. Sylvia is survived by her kids Mary Ann Vic, Michael (Sharon), Brenda Carchidi (Sal Sr.), and Danny (Diane). Also left behind are grandchildren Chris and Ashley Vic, Steven and Andrew (Darquise) Pedwysocki, Sal Jr., and Michael (Stacey) Carchidi along with great-grandchildren Emilie, Hunter, Will, Gage, Isabella, and Elliott. She also leaves her sister Jean Seaman and family as well as brother Wilf Chubak.

Mom always hoped to be a nurse – and she made it happen. She worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital for 36 years where she found real joy caring for patients while spoiling them too. On weekends we’d make memories camping or fishing together. Saturday nights often meant trips to the drive-in movies. Mom loved spending time gardening; she took real pride in the veggies she grew. Cooking for family and friends was another joy of hers – she liked trying new recipes from her huge cookbook collection.

She was an active member of the Church of the Holy Protection where she spent many happy hours with friends organizing bingos, teas, and suppers to raise funds for the church. After retiring from St. Joseph’s she enjoyed swimming with new pals. Bus tours were a favorite pastime along with monthly lunches with fellow retired nurses but most importantly spending time with family who meant so much to her.

Sylvia was predeceased by her husband Michael Pedwysocki; parents Frank and Mary Chubak; in-laws Daniel and Martha Pedwysocki; sister-in-law Mary Ann Chubak; brother-in-law John Seaman; brother Walter Kostantin with his wife Anne; their son Bruce; plus her close friend Bill Hawryluk.

The family wants to thank the staff on the 5th Floor at Lakehead Manor for giving mom exceptional care-they made it feel like home for her. She really loved all of you.

Mom always had a smile ready along with kind words and a big heart for everyone lucky enough to know her.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p. m., Thursday February 26, 2026 at Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel located at 21 N. Court Street in Thunder Bay, ON followed by a reception.

If you wish to honor mom instead of sending flowers please consider donations to The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or Muscular Dystrophy Canada-or any charity you choose.
