Sylvia Kostecki - Obituary - Northwest Ontario

We are saddened to share that Sylvia Florence Kostecki (nee Button), aged 87, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2026, with her husband at her side. She was born on February 18, 1939, in Fort William, Ontario. Sylvia went to Fort William Vocational Institute where she took part in lots of clubs and sports teams. She graduated with honours in 1957 and served as Student Council President. She married her high school sweetheart Alex on September 12, 1959.

Sylvia’s life always revolved around people. Her home was a warm spot where family and friends came together for meals and meaningful talks that made lasting memories. She loved spending time with those close to her and had this natural way of making everyone feel like they belonged.

On the job front, Sylvia worked for many years but really stood out as an independent sales rep specializing in giftware. She tackled her work with energy and determination and truly valued the connections she made with colleagues, clients, and shop owners across Northwestern Ontario. Her friendly nature and honesty earned her a lot of respect.

Sylvia enjoyed being active and had a strong love for music too. Dancing brought her lots of happiness-whether it was square dancing or round dancing. She also liked clogging’s beat but most of all cherished ballroom dancing gracefully alongside her husband-those moments stayed close to her heart throughout life.

A keen traveler at heart, Sylvia loved discovering new places alongside Alex. They shared adventures through international trips and cruises that filled their lives with fun stories. Florida was a favorite getaway spot where she soaked up sunrays while catching up with lifelong pals. The family also spent many years driving all over Canada and the U. S., pulling their trailer along open highways enjoying freedom on wheels. Some of the best times were camping outdoors at Sibley Provincial Park surrounded by nature-and the people she loved.

Faith played a big role in Sylvia’s life too. She was deeply involved in church communities from early days at St. Luke’s Anglican Church then later at Gathering Table Anglican Church. She gave plenty of time and care to help others there through various activities which gave her comfort as well as purpose.

People will remember Sylvia for being kind-hearted yet independent; adventurous yet loving towards family, friends, and community alike.

She leaves behind her husband Alex Kostecki; daughters Wendy Bell, Charlene Kostecki (Maury), Leanne Barch (John); plus grandchildren Maurissa, Janessa, Cassie, Ronan, Jessica, and Lauren.

Sylvia was preceded in death by parents Charles and Hilda Button.

The family wants to thank all healthcare workers who helped keep Sylvia active over the years.

Visitation will happen Monday March 16th at Gathering Table Anglican Church (228 Pearl Street) starting at 9:00 a. m., followed by the Funeral Service at 10:00 a. m., led by Rev. Ann Camber. Afterward everyone is welcome to join the family for fellowship in the Parish hall downstairs. The burial will take place after lunch at Mountain View Cemetery where all are invited to attend as well.

If you’d like to send something instead of flowers donations may be made to Gathering Table Anglican Church or St. Joseph’s Foundation.
