Sister Norma Zorzi - Obituary - Northwest Ontario

Sister Norma Zorzi, CSJ

(Sister M. Genevieve)

April 9, 1937 – March 27, 2026

In her 69th year of religious life

With heavy hearts but much thankfulness, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie announce the passing of our dear Sister Norma Zorzi, who peacefully died at St. Joseph’s Motherhouse on March 27, 2026.

Norma’s start in life was fragile-she almost didn’t make it through infancy due to a severe case of meningitis. This experience wasn’t just seen as survival by her family and herself; they called it grace. Raised in the strong faith of her parents, Ferdinando and Ines Liut, and supported by prayers from the Grey Nuns along with parishioners and caregivers, Norma’s early life was quietly shaped by one clear truth: she belonged to God in a special way.

Growing up in Sault Ste. Marie as a loved daughter in a close-knit Italian family meant that faith wasn’t just talked about-it was lived out at every meal, in church activities, acts of kindness, and family ties. This way of life stayed with her throughout everything: she valued family deeply, stayed loyal to those around her, and showed love more through actions than words.

Though still carrying some effects from her childhood illness, Norma felt a quiet but steady call inside-to “be of service to anyone who needed help in any way.” On February 14, 1958 she joined the Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie to answer this call with her whole heart.

Her work didn’t come with big fanfare but happened in everyday moments-the behind-the-scenes roles that keep communities going strong. Using her skills in secretarial work and administration, she became a reliable support in hospitals, schools, and leadership across Northern Ontario. She worked quietly but faithfully so others could thrive without ever needing attention for herself; instead she was like a steady light guiding others.

Despite ongoing health challenges from her illness long ago, Norma never let limits define who she was or what she could do. Her life showed patience and strength rooted in faith-a patient giving back generously over time for God’s people.

Living mostly around Sault Ste. Marie also revealed how important community was to her faith journey. She found ways to connect through church involvement like the Catholic Women’s League and staying committed to Associates of the Sisters of St. Joseph wherever she went. Friends knew they could count on Norma’s gentle yet steady friendship that made them feel valued and not alone.

Even after retiring from formal duties she kept serving-volunteering at hospitals and nursing homes as well as food programs and parish events at Holy Family Church where spiritual support mattered just as much as practical help. Her faith reflected both quiet reflection and active care without drawing attention.

Apart from service there were small pleasures too-sewing projects learned from mom , painting ceramics creatively , travelling when possible , enjoying time spent with community. These things weren’t distractions but part of living fully – showing gratitude for simple joys alongside devotion.

Toward the end when health worsened leading back to Motherhouse living , Norma became even more prayerful. Her calm presence spoke softly about resilience combined with letting go gently into God ’s care who had been by her side all along.

She leaves behind brothers Ernest (Marlene) and Rino , niece , nephews , plus one close friend Sister Roberta Low. She lost nephew Fr. Dan Zorzi , CSB before passing. For all who knew her these are not only memories but proof of steady faithful living – honest human commitment sustained over years.

The Sisters together with family & friends will meet at St. Joseph ’s Motherhouse located at 2025 Main Street West North Bay ON Tuesday March 31. Sister Norma ’s body will arrive at Holy Family Chapel starting around 2 p. m., followed by wake service sharing stories & memories at 4 p. m. The Resurrection Liturgy happens Wednesday April 1st starting prayers about10:50 then mass11:00 am afterwards burial takes place at St Mary ’s Cemetery.

You can honor Sister Norma by donating toward the works done by Sisters Of St Joseph Sault Ste Marie. May Sister Norma watch over us now from above while we keep up what she cared most about — faithful service for everyone around us. Rest well dear Sister.
