Natalie (Horychuk) Cherkas - Obituary - Northwest Ontario

“An angel on earth – now has her wings.”

Natalie (Horychuk) Cherkas’s family is heartbroken to share that she passed away peacefully after a brief illness on January 11, 2026, at the age of 95.

She was a devoted mom to Joy (John) Janicki from Winnipeg; Cynthia Prince (Jeff Beitz) from Thunder Bay; Mark (Janine) Cherkas from Vancouver; and Bobbi-Jane Drebit of Thunder Bay. Natalie was a proud grandma to Sunny (Tim) Giesbrecht, Steven (Erin) Janicki, Spencer Janicki, Devon Cherkas, Skylar Marks, Leland Prince, and Scott (Tanya) Prince. She also loved being great-grandmother to Aubrey, Harper, and Archer Giesbrecht; Kinley and Cruz Janicki; Ava Cherkas; plus Trenton and Tristan Prince. She was a sister to Ivan Horychuk in Pittsburg, California. Her close friends Maggie Siciliano and Jodi Roehrig were very special to her and shared a strong connection with her daughters and family. Many family members and friends will miss her dearly.

Helping others was something Natalie cared about deeply throughout her life – both in the jobs she did and all the volunteering she took part in.

She went ahead of us after losing her loving husband Steve Cherkas in 1999. Her brother Steve Horychuk also passed before her as did her parents John and Olga Horychuk along with her in-laws Joseph and Katherine Cherkas.

In line with what Natalie wanted, cremation has been done. There won’t be any visitation or funeral service held. She’ll be buried beside Steve at St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

If you’d like to send sympathy gifts please consider donating to the Heart and Stroke Foundation instead of flowers since the family would prefer no floral arrangements right now.

Huge thanks go out to Paramed Home Care for their wonderful care which helped Natalie stay independent at home until she turned 95. Their kindness meant so much more than words can say. The hospice team during Natalie’s final days also deserves big appreciation for bringing comfort, care, and warmth when it counted most.

All the angels above have welcomed a newcomer with open arms.

Heaven, we know, has just become a little nicer.
