The Waterloo Region District School Board said they’re looking into things after two students had skin irritations from sitting on toilets at school.
The board mentioned these cases happened recently at Stewart Avenue Public School and Hespeler Public School, both in Cambridge. A communications officer told Cambridge Chronicle that both incidents took place around the same time.
Once the board found out about it, they sent a letter to parents and guardians.
“We want to inform you that some students have experienced varying levels of a skin reaction after using a bathroom at school,” the letter read.
The board stressed that “children are not at risk” and “considerable actions have been taken.” Steps taken include closing off the bathroom involved, thoroughly cleaning other toilets, and checking all cleaning products used, according to the board.
An outside third party has also been brought in to assist with the investigation, the school system said.
Cambridge Chronicle reached out to the school board for comment and got this response:
“The investigation is still ongoing, and as a result we are not in a position to be able to comment on any cause, or the investigation itself. As soon as we were informed of the situation, we developed a safety plan that was put in place at both schools that involved the principal, school superintendent, manager of health and safety and the facility manager.
“The safety and well-being of our students continues to be our top priority.”
The board encourages anyone with questions or concerns to contact them directly and says they’ll keep handling this until it’s sorted out.
