Urgent safety actions, including closing the road and pavement, have been set up at Our Lady and the English Martyrs (OLEM) church in Cambridge after a report showed problems with the church’s steeple and bell tower structure.
A recent inspection of the steeple on this Grade 1 listed church, which is 133 years old, found “stone fall, finial failure, cracking and signs of failure with potential danger to the public on the pavement below”.
Because of this report, OLEM quickly asked highways officials for advice on how to keep people safe, including possibly shutting the pavement.
A spokesperson for the Diocese of East Anglia said: “We understand that Cambridgeshire Council Council have decided to temporarily close parts of Hills Road and the pavement on Lensfield Road.
“The parish is seeking urgent specialist conservation advice and assistance to both ensure public safety and to remedy the structural failings as soon as is practicable.
“The bells will not be rung until further notice, but the services in the church will remain unaffected.”
