Public Safety Response to Memorial Drive on May 11; Suspect Taken Into Custody

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan, Massachusetts State Police Colonel Geoffrey Noble, and Acting Police Commissioner Pauline Wells have confirmed they’re investigating a shooting that happened earlier today on Memorial Drive in Cambridge, between River Street and Pleasant Street Extension.

Just after 1:00 p. m., Cambridge Police got a call from Boston Police saying there might be someone in Cambridge connected to the shooting who was acting strangely. Boston Police also mentioned that the suspect was believed to be carrying a rifle.

Cambridge Police along with Massachusetts State Police responded quickly to the Memorial Drive area. When State Police arrived, they found an active shooter scenario. The suspect was walking east on foot down the road, reportedly carrying an assault-style rifle and firing it erratically at cars driving by.

The suspect allegedly shot two men inside separate vehicles before being stopped by a Massachusetts State Police Trooper and a civilian who legally had a firearm. Even after being confronted, the suspect kept firing and hit the State Police Cruiser. Both the Trooper and civilian fired back, hitting the suspect multiple times in his arms and legs.

The suspect received medical treatment right there from officers before being taken to a hospital in Boston. The two victims, who don’t seem to know him, were hospitalized with serious injuries that threaten their lives.

Early findings suggest around 60 shots were fired within just minutes. This created an extremely dangerous situation during busy afternoon hours when people were out driving, walking, biking, or rowing on the river nearby.

The person involved has been identified as Tyler Brown, 46 years old from Boston. He’s now under custody at the hospital and is expected to face charges including two counts of armed assault with intent to murder plus firearms violations.

This investigation is ongoing with Middlesex District Attorney’s Office working together with Massachusetts State Police and Cambridge Police. Anyone who saw anything or has video from this afternoon is asked to contact State Police Detectives at 781-897-6600.

Those involved have also requested privacy during this time.
