Elderly woman hurt in Cambridge distraction theft

A group of suspected distraction thieves went after an elderly couple in Cambridge, leaving one of them with minor injuries.

According to Waterloo regional police, the incident took place Tuesday afternoon just after 2:30, while the seniors were out walking near Green Vista Drive and Crawford Crescent, close to Franklin Boulevard and Can-Amera Parkway.

Police said a car pulled up next to the husband and wife during their walk, and the driver asked the husband for directions.

While they were talking, a woman and a girl-who might have been as young as 15-approached the wife and offered to bless her for Diwali.

Officers said they grabbed the elderly woman’s hands and tried to put a necklace on her.

But she pushed back, and that’s when police say the suspects forcefully took off her necklace, causing some minor injuries.

All three then drove away from the scene.

The man driving the four-door car was described as South Asian, around his mid-40s, stocky build, with brown hair.

The female suspect was also South Asian, mid-40s, heavier build, wearing a head covering.

The younger female suspect was South Asian too, roughly 15 to 17 years old, slim build, dressed in dark clothes.

Police want anyone who saw what happened or has security camera footage from nearby homes to get in touch.
