Ridge House, Grey County, ON, Canada
Sitting quietly between open fields and the edge of a forest, Ridge House gently follows the slope of the land. The design really respects the natural terrain and blends right in. Superkül used the shape of the land to boost privacy and point views just right. The standout feature is definitely the sculptural roof – it feels like part of the landscape itself.
The house was made to highlight their clients’ wish for a distinct sloping roof and year-round closeness to nature. Because of where it sits, it’s both welcoming and protected from weather. Superkül came up with a plan that works with what’s already there-a natural downhill slope, high water table nearby, plus an impressive ironwood tree-to fit the house into its environment while making sure views connect with that tree and surrounding pine forest at the clearing’s edge. That big sloping roof seems to hover just above the field’s horizon line while keeping the front hidden from passersby on the main road.
Ridge House focuses on passive design first and uses top-quality materials and systems throughout. Deep overhangs protect those tall triple-pane windows on both east and west sides-helping keep heat out during summer but letting winter sunlight warm things inside when it’s cold.
The glass accordion doors along the west side pair up with retractable insect screens so you can enjoy being outside without worrying about bugs when they’re around.
These doors open wide for great airflow which cuts down on needing air conditioning in summer. They lead out to a cantilevered walkway designed to show off how gently sloped this spot really is.

Nestling this house down into a small dip also helps block strong winds while getting some cooling shade from nearby woods. Because there’s a high water table here they skipped adding a basement which helped lower how much concrete was needed overall too. p >
The clients wanted a peaceful place where inside meets outside easily; they liked neutral colors mostly matte surfaces plus natural materials all around. Not only does this build sit well within its land but clever touches bring nature inside as part of daily living too. The main bathroom looks onto its own little private garden space-the hidden gem sitting right at this home’s center.

This garden sits under a square opening cut into that big roof structure above while wooden screens surround it casting cool shadows across its floor. The empty space formed here lets more light slip sideways into other rooms nearby. Staggered skylights bounce sunlight off curved ceilings plus walls in living & dining areas giving soft glow all through. The southwest corner has a firepit tucked under vaulted plywood ceiling, and kitchen gray tones carry over from outside cladding on supporting piers bringing outdoor vibe inside nicely.
Designed tough enough for rural Ontario weather, Rid ge Hou se puts durability front & center. Everything-from standing seam metal roofing & siding outsi de, to marine-grade plywood & factory-made woodwork treated with low-VOC water-based stain that soaks up light yet protects against scratches, mold & stains-is built solidly for long-term wear & easy care.
