Melvyn John Broughton, aged 85, from Chatham, Ontario, passed away quietly on April 9, 2024 at Blenheim Community Village. Mel was the eldest son of William and Alice Broughton (nee Reid). He was a devoted husband to Patricia (nee Kennedy) for more than 30 years until her passing in 2021. He was predeceased by his brother Garry Broughton and his son Michael Broughton. Mel leaves behind his daughter Sheila Mc Intosh (David), step-daughter Lisa Uher, step-son Ryan Deakins; grandchildren DJ Mc Intosh, Michael Mc Intosh, Lauren Uher, Emily Uher, Claire Uher, Craig Church, Tyler Deakins; and great-grandchildren Danielle, Dakota, Cole, Jonathan, Sawyer, and Arlo.

Born in Pontefract, England, Mel came to Canada as a young boy. In 1957 he joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served until he was honourably discharged in 1962. After settling with his family in Cambridge, Ontario he worked in sales before discovering his real passion as an auctioneer and real estate agent. Mel had a flair for showmanship – whether selling bicycles for the Police Department or whole farms out in rural Ontario – he enjoyed being front and center. As a real estate agent he really got satisfaction helping folks find their forever homes. Being an ex-Navy man meant he loved sailing on his sailboat and was proud to be part of the Blenheim Legion. In 1993 he married Patricia and they moved to Chatham together. They shared many travels including lots of Caribbean cruises and time at their timeshare spot in Collingwood. Mel also cherished hanging out with his buddy Vince – catching movies or grabbing lunch or coffee at Tim Hortons for some good conversation. His loss will be felt deeply by all who knew him. Huge thanks to Dr. Martha Clendenning and all the wonderful staff at Blenheim Community Village who showed such care and kindness during both Mel’s and Pat’s time there – they created a warm sense of friendship that brought many laughs and touching moments.

Following his wishes, Mel will be cremated. If you’d like to make donations instead of sending flowers they can be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation at www. parkinson. org or the Heart and Stroke Foundation at www. heartandstroke. ca
