The total deal value shows just how important the Cambridge Cluster still is worldwide, with lots of mergers and acquisitions happening alongside a big boost in investment for Deep Tech and new therapies.
Two deals really stood out because of their size. The largest one was Honeywell buying Johnson Matthey’s catalyst business for about $2.4bn in May. This sale lets Johnson Matthey concentrate on its clean air and Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) divisions.
In life sciences, Astra Zeneca made a key acquisition by snapping up Belgian company Eso Biotec for $425 million upfront, which could reach $1bn if certain goals are met. Eso Biotec’s ENa BL cell therapy platform will help speed up AZ’s plans to develop groundbreaking cancer treatments.
Astra Zeneca, which recently promised to invest $50bn over the next five years in the US, is already moving forward with those plans. Just last week they revealed a $4.5 billion investment in a new factory near Charlottesville, Virginia, starting work immediately. Then this week AZ showed off an upgraded manufacturing site in Coppell, Texas that cost $445m.
Other big M&A moves included UK financial services comparison leader Go. Compare buying Cambridge insurance startup Rnwl for up to £63m, while natural extracts company Treatt agreed to sell for £173.8m to Natara Global.

A surge in funding led by quantum computing and medical robotics
The total disclosed funding raised by Cambridge science and tech firms so far this year has passed $1.697bn. Almost half of that comes from Quantinuum and CMR Surgical, showing strong investor belief in cutting-edge tech.
Quantinuum landed the biggest single raise: $600m at a pre-money valuation of $10bn. Backers like Honeywell, NVIDIA’s NVentures VC arm, and JPMorgan Chase supported the quantum computing leader as it pushes ahead with its Helios system and fault-tolerant computing development.
CMR Surgical brought in another $200m through equity and debt to push global growth of its Versius Surgical Robot System – especially focusing on breaking into the US market.
A few other tech startups also pulled impressive rounds: AI materials search engine Cusp AI raised over $100m Series A; legal AI pioneer Luminance closed a $75m Series C; graphene chip maker Paragraf got an extra $55m funding round.

The life sciences sector keeps drawing international cash
This year so far Cambridge life sciences companies have raised about $734.26m globally for breakthrough therapies. Three firms make up more than half that sum – CMR Surgical ($200m), Cell Centric ($120m), and Charm Therapeutics ($80m).
This May Cell Centric scored a big $120m Series C round to continue fighting a tough form of cancer. They’ll use it mainly to push forward their oral p300/CBP inhibitor drug called inobrodib into registration trials.
The round was co-led by Boston’s RA Capital Management along with newcomer Forbion from the Netherlands plus US investors Avego Bioscience Capital and Bright Edge – which is linked to the American Cancer Society’s venture arm.
The previous month CHARM Therapeutics announced an $80m Series B round aimed at developing top-tier menin inhibitors targeting Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). New backers NEA (New Enterprise Associates) and SR One joined existing supporters Orbi Med, F-Prime, NVIDIA, and Khosla Ventures for this raise.
Basing themselves locally at Babraham Research Campus now after raising over $150 million total so far CHARM is pushing its lead menin inhibitor towards early 2026 clinical trials.
This year also saw significant raises from Maxion Therapeutics ($72m), Quibim ($50m), Cyted Health ($44m), Alchemab Therapeutics ($32m), TRIMTECH Therapeutics ($31m) and Owlstone Medical ($27m).

Maxion develops antibody-based Knot Body® drugs aimed at ion channel & GPCR-driven diseases.
Kicking off 2025 Health Tech firm Quibim raised a solid $50 million Series A aiming to transform precision medicine via AI-powered biomarkers technology.
Their round was headed by Asabys through fund Sabadell Asabys II together with Buenavista Equity Partners’ BHG I fund built alongside Columbus Venture Partners; other newcomers were UI Investissement & Go Hub Ventures joining returning backers Amadeus Capital Partners, APEX Ventures & others including Tony Fadell’s Build Collective as well as biotech entrepreneur Dr Jonathan Milner himself.
Cyted Health partnered with Alchemab last month announcing major scale-up financings too – Cyted secured a 44-million-dollar Series B injection focused on expanding within U. S., where it already operates using advanced gastrointestinal molecular diagnostic technologies!
EQT Life Sciences led this latest Cyted round through EQT Health Economics strategy while Advent Life Sciences & British Business Bank co-led; current investors Morningside & BGF stayed involved too.
$32M more came into Alchemab Therapeutics lifting their series A haul beyond 114 million dollars altogether! Ono Venture Investment joined forces here along other specialized funds such as RA Capital plus SV Health Investors among others including strategic support from Lilly itself.
Lilly also put money behind TRIMTECH Therapeutics – young Cambridge biotech working on targeted protein degradation strategies against neurodegenerative disorders. TRIMTECH secured an oversubscribed £25 million seed earlier this year involving numerous US-based investors.
CIC (Cambridge Innovation Capital) led that raise along SV Health Investors Dementia Discovery Fund plus M Ventures USA & Pfizer Ventures NYC all participating alongside Eli Lilly Co., MP Healthcare Venture Management USA plus local players like Cambridge Enterprise Ventures + Start Codon (now part of CIC family).
