An Arthur Erickson Home in Canada Lists for $2.8 Million

A notable architectural home in Canada has just come up for sale. It was designed by the famous, late architect Arthur Erickson back in 1974 for businessman Richard Hilborn. The house sits on 1.8 acres right along the Grand River in Cambridge, Ontario. Erickson is one of Canada’s most important architects and is actually the only Canadian to win an American Institute of Architects Gold Medal, thanks to his work on the Canadian embassy in Washington, D. C.

Hilborn House, sometimes called the Ramparts, mixes wood, brick, and glass beautifully and is set into a lush ravine about a 1.5-hour drive southwest of Toronto. It’s listed for 3.9 million Canadian dollars (around $2.8 million) with Marco and Lamees Chiappetta from Sotheby’s International Realty Canada.

This house is part of what people call Erickson’s Signature Collection and shows off some design features he loved using. The design focuses on blending with nature and filling rooms with natural light through skylights and glass walls that make it feel like indoors and outdoors flow together seamlessly. Almost every room has cedar ceilings, plus there’s a cedar roof deck giving lots of space outside above the house.

The highlight inside is a huge atrium-like great room meant for both big gatherings or quiet time alone. There are also cozy living and family rooms perfect for hanging out casually, while the kitchen has been modernized with Gaggenau appliances and a big island at its center. The home includes three bedrooms and four bathrooms total – including a main suite that opens up to its own private garden along with a large bathroom featuring an indoor sauna plus two original mosaic-tiled showers.

On top of that rooftop deck, you’ll find multiple balconies and patios where you can enjoy being outdoors too. The green spaces have drip irrigation systems installed, plus you’ve basically got the Grand River right there in your backyard! A heated U-shaped driveway along with an attached garage for two cars round out this property nicely.

If you’re comparing Erickson homes though, Hilborn House is actually quite affordable by his standards. A few years ago his modernist Eppich House II – which features glass-and-steel construction cascading down a wooded hillside – was put up for sale in 2023 after a lengthy restoration at $9.5 million.
