James Alexander Mitchell Obituary May 6, 2026

With heavy hearts, the family of James “Jim” Alexander Mitchell share the news that he passed away on May 6, 2026, in Huntsville, Ontario. He was 81 years old.

Jim was born on July 26, 1944, in Peterborough, Ontario. Over his life he packed it full with curiosity and creativity. Always eager to learn and try new things, Jim took on many roles – from serving as a police officer to working for Shell Canada. Most folks remember him as the proud owner of The Oxtongue Craft Cabin for sixteen years where he became a friendly and familiar face around town.

He really lived life to the fullest. Jim had all kinds of interests – flying planes, gardening, staying fit, riding motorcycles, and playing music. He was an outstanding skier too – downhill, cross country, telemark skiing and even heliskiing were some of his favorites. Plus he loved Canadian art and photography along with reading good books. But above all that stuff? Jim had this amazing way of making friends wherever he went; you couldn’t help but warm up to him right away.

He leaves behind siblings Donna (Joslin), Bob (Dawna), Debra (Sutherland), Joanne (Art Graham), and Brenda (Lucarelli), plus lots of nieces and nephews who’ll miss him dearly. Sadly he was preceded in death by his brothers Jack and Steve as well as sisters Heather (Good) and Carol.

The family is thankful for all the stories shared and kindness shown by everyone who knew Jim over the years. His humor, generosity, and adventurous streak will be remembered fondly by those who knew him best.

A time to get together with family and friends to celebrate Jim’s life will be planned soon.
