Leslie Dean Culbert - Obituary - Northwest Ontario

We’re saddened to share that Leslie Dean Culbert passed away peacefully on May 20, 2026, in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He was 93. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Leslie made his way to northern Ontario in the early ’50s. He worked with the Ontario Provincial Police across detachments in Thunder Bay, Longlac, and Nipigon before moving on to the Lakehead Harbour Police where he served as Chief for several years.

After a long career in law enforcement, Leslie switched gears in the early 1970s and got into trucking. He started hauling logs and eventually teamed up with his brother-in-law to run a long-haul trucking business covering routes all over Canada and the U. S., until retiring in the late ’90s.

Leslie leaves behind his daughter Leslie (married to Paul Malcolm), sons Terry (with Carolyn Lehto) and Brad. Also surviving him are daughter-in-law Dawn (married to Dave), grandchildren Kelsey and Colton Culbert, plus Shae Malcolm (and Steve Borysiewicz). His sister Zelda Stentiford and brother Lorne Culbert are also part of his extended family. He was predeceased by his wife Olga Marion Culbert after 68 years together; son Dean Culbert (and Dawn); brothers Don and Gordon Culbert; brother-in-law Merlyn Stentiford (Zelda); along with other relatives.

The family wants to send out a big thank you to all the doctors, nurses, and staff at St. Joseph’s Care Group Hospice and Palliative Care unit as well as those at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC). Special thanks go out too to the second-floor team at Southbridge Lakehead Manor for their kind and thoughtful care of our dad.

Following Leslie’s wishes, close family will hold a private gathering at St. Andrew’s Cemetery for his ashes.
