Obituary of George Frederick England

Funny, charming, caring, tough, and selfless are just a few ways to describe George Frederick England, who quietly passed away on May 19, 2026 at the age of 85.

George has now reunited in Heaven with his dear wife of 60 years, Nancy (2024). He is warmly remembered with much love and gratitude by his daughter Nancy (John) Sulja, his son Bill (Beth) England, and his grandchildren Olivia (Danijel), Emma, Grant and William-all of whom meant the world to him. Also surviving him is his nephew Terry (Carol) England; he was preceded in death by his niece Kathie Menogue (2013). Many other family members, friends and neighbours will remember him fondly. George was born on March 30, 1941 at home in Windsor’s west end to Annie (1977) and Robert (1983) England. He was the last living sibling from his family: brothers Robert (1986), Gerry (2021), Raymond (2005), and sister Dawn (2023).

After finishing school at Herman Collegiate Institute where he stood out playing hockey and football, George went on to teacher’s college. He spent 35 years working in education starting as a teacher at Walker Public School-where he met Nancy-and Glenwood. Later on he served as vice-principal at Roseland, King Edward, Roseville and Dougall schools before becoming principal at Princess Elizabeth. A proud Canadian through and through but quick to point out the England family roots were from Northern Ireland. George was an enthusiastic fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Blue Jays and Argonauts. Some personal highlights for him included running three Detroit marathons (1984, 1987, 1991), carrying the Olympic torch locally plus representing Canada during the Opening Ceremonies of the Calgary Winter Olympics in 1988.

Big thanks go out to Dr. James Colapinto, Dr. Annie Kanwar along with all the nurses on 5 North at Windsor Regional Hospital – Met Campus; also grateful for care from Dr. Y. Emara Centre palliative unit for their amazing support.

Visitation will be held at Windsor Chapel – South Chapel (3048 Dougall Ave, 519-253-7236) on Sunday May 24th 2026 from 2:00pm until service time at 4:00pm. Instead of flowers you’re invited to donate to Transition to Betterness (T2B) or Windsor/Essex County Humane Society.
