Audrey Joan Cain (née Stebbings), aged 92, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2026, in Barrie, Ontario, Canada. Born on Christmas Day 1933 in Barrie, Audrey lived a life full of strength, kindness, and commitment to those around her. She was the proud mother of Patricia Cain, Paul Cain (Margot), and Michael Cain (Laurie). Audrey was also a loving grandmother to seven grandchildren and a great-grandmother to seven great-grandchildren. She had many close friends who appreciated her warmth and generosity. Audrey was preceded in death by her parents and all nine siblings – truly the end of an era for her family.
Having survived polio early in life, Audrey faced challenges head-on with courage and hope. She spent much time advocating for people with disabilities and volunteered generously with Children’s Aid, seniors groups, and students needing extra support. Books were a big part of her life along with card games like euchre and bridge that she really enjoyed. For years she also gave her time to the March of Dimes/Post Polio Program as a dedicated volunteer.
Audrey was active locally too through Rebekah’s Lodge #190 right here in Barrie. Faith played a key role for her-she was involved at St. George’s Anglican Church for many years and also attended First Baptist Church during different times of her life. Her spirituality gave her both comfort and direction.
She’ll be remembered for seeing good in everyone she met and sharing kindness freely. Those who knew Audrey will recall how often she smiled or laughed – always uplifting the room around her. Her example showed what caring persistence looks like without expecting anything back; it really touched lots of lives over time. The family wants to say thanks to Reverend Donna along with the staff at Bob Rumball Home for the Deaf for their kind care near the end.
