A condo building by the Charles River in Cambridge, Massachusetts, that’s been having some serious problems is now set to be torn down after officials found it was unsafe last month.
Last year, everyone living in the Riverview’s 80 units had to leave because of worries about long-term safety issues.
The company managing the Riverview condos on Mount Auburn Street said they found structural problems while fixing the roof the previous year.
The condo association mentioned these problems had gone unnoticed for nearly 60 years and include using “substandard concrete” and putting reinforcing steel rebar in the wrong places.
Now, the City of Cambridge is getting ready to take on demolition, which will be one of its biggest and most disruptive projects in a while. Parts of Mount Auburn and Sparks streets will close starting next weekend, causing disruptions for neighbors around there for months.
The management company for the Riverview condos in Cambridge has made residents evacuate after discovering structural issues.

NBC10 Boston talked with folks from the apartment building next door who said people are worried about getting their property fixed if things go wrong.
“They seem to say that there’s a risk of collapse, uncontrolled collapse or pancake collapse where one floor collapses and then all of them collapse so that’s a fear and I think we’re the closest building and our building is 100 years old so we’re just concerned about what that could do,” neighbor William Teresa said. “It feels like it’s going to take a long time. Demo could be like 3-4 months they said.”
Teresa added they’re planning to close off Mount Auburn Street right outside his door but he’s still not sure how people will get in or out once they start shutting it down on July 19.
