It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Alan Cavell’s passing. Alan lived with honesty, determination, and a strong sense of purpose. He was the devoted partner of Jacqueline Powell, father and stepfather to Stuart, Matthew (Charlotte), Amy (Paul), and Vanessa (Michael); and grandpa to Maeve, Rowan, Darragh, Euan, Callum and Nolan. Sadly, Alan was preceded in death by three infant grandsons.
Born in Owen Sound, Ontario to Sidney and Rachel Cavell, Alan grew up on a farm in Sarawak Township where he helped out from an early age. He was the youngest of seven siblings-Bill, Joan, Phyllis, Marjorie, Gayle have all passed before him-and survived by Kaye. Many nieces and nephews were proud to call him uncle; countless friends and relatives remember him fondly.
After finishing high school, Alan left the farm to study Political Studies & Public Administration at the University of Guelph. He stayed on for further education there as well, earning a Master of Science in Extension Education which focused on non-formal community education along with leadership and outreach. His dedication to making a difference in his community stayed with him his whole life.
Alan spent his career living out his values around caring for others and social justice. Early on he worked as a Program Supervisor for the Ministry of Community and Social Services where he helped develop many programs aimed at helping older adults stay healthy and independent. For example, it was through his vision that Community Care groups began popping up across Ontario.
Later on he took the role of Executive Director at Victoria Manor Home for the Aged in Lindsay before moving into what became his true calling: leading branches of Victoria Order of Nurses (VON). Over many years he grew programs across places like Hastings, Northumberland & Peterborough areas plus North Bay, Durham region as well as Kingston, Calgary and Ottawa-making services stronger wherever he went.
Once retired Alan decided to be self-employed buying then fixing up family homes which he rented out afterwards. Tenants appreciated how much care he put into those homes – one called him “an earth angel.” Besides this work he also volunteered time supporting causes such as Community Care Peterborough , Thrive , and Universal Basic Income initiatives.
He will be remembered for his clever jokes (“punny” humor), deep kindness along with generosity plus quiet inner strength. Family members along with friends or colleagues in community work will miss him badly.
A Celebration of Life will take place Saturday May 2nd from 1 until 4 pm at Holiday Inn Peterborough.
If you wish you can honor Alan by donating either to VON Canada or another charity close to your heart.
